This was the first book I had read by Theodore Roosevelt. I have seen things about the Rough Riders in other books and had been interested to read his account of the group and the fighting in Cuba.

The book was interesting and it gave me insight into the man that was to be by: The Rough Riders is Roosevelts account of his volunteer cavalry unit in the Spanish-American War.

A few impressions I got from the book: (1) Smokeless gunpowder was a much bigger deal than I realized. (2) Roosevelt and the Rough Riders really liked war and the glory that came along with it/5. The author of the book was Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States, and the one that the teddy bear was named after.

He was involved in the raising of a volunteer unit, that became known as the "Rough Riders" - even today, the name has an honourable meaning for many Americans/5(). President Roosevelt's personal narrative of his adventures during the Spanish-American War.

The Rough Riders were a uniquely American crew of cowboys, scholars, land speculators, American Indians, and African Americans, and this volume chronicles their triumphs and defeats with riveting and engrossing detail.
